3 Common Traps of "Affordable" Dumpster Rentals

If a price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Out-of-state brokers and low-value companies often use bait-and-switch tactics centered around a few key traps. Here’s what to watch out for.

Beware of Affordable type companies offering $199 - $300 rates on dumpsters that charge by the pound.

1. Deceptive Tonnage Fees and Low Weight Caps

Every dumpster rental includes a tonnage cap, which is the amount of weight included in the price. If you go over this cap, you pay overage fees. Scammers exploit this in two ways:

Setting Unrealistic Ton Caps: A company might offer a 20-yard dumpster with a 1-ton cap. This is a trap. They know that the average weight for a 20-yard dumpster is significantly higher.

Charging Extreme Overage Fees: A fair and acceptable overage rate is typically between $70 and $100 per ton. The real scam is in charging by the pound. A fee of "$0.10 per pound" sounds small, but it's designed to mislead you.

There are 2,000 pounds in one ton. Always ask for the ton cap and the exact price per ton for overages before you order.

How much does a full dumpster weigh?

When deciding on the best dumpster for your project, pay close attention to the stated ton cap. Some companies only provide the ton cap in the fine print, but not Milwaukee Dumpster Rental, we pride ourselves on being the most transparent, affordable and reliable dumpster service around! You can find the ton caps for each of our rental sizes above, as well as on our ordering page.

  • The average debris weight of a 30 yard roll off is 3.12 Ton.  (avg of all types of work from household to construction projects)
  • The average debris weight of a 20 yard roll off is 2.1 Ton.   (avg of all types of work from household to construction projects)
  • The average debris weight of a 12 yard roll off is 1.8 Ton.   (avg of all types of work from household to construction projects)

2. Fake or Filtered Customer Reviews

Trustworthy companies have a history of public feedback. If you can't find reviews for a dumpster company on independent sites like Google or Yelp, be very suspicious.

A common tactic is to use a third-party review company that allows them to filter and post only positive feedback on their own website. If you see a company's page with 4,068 flawless "5 out of 5 stars" reviews but they are nowhere to be found elsewhere online, it's a major red flag.

3. The "Lowest Price" Bait and Switch

The promise of a rock-bottom price, like "$199.99 for a dumpster," is almost always bait. This price will be for something you don't need or comes with so many restrictions that you are forced to "upsell" into a more expensive rental. This new rental will, of course, feature the low ton caps and high overage fees mentioned above.

With this promise, you also get what you pay for: potentially a rusty, unsafe dumpster with difficult-to-operate gates. Worse, these poorly maintained containers often leak, leaving stubborn rust and hydraulic fluid stains on your concrete driveway.

Dumpster Service Comparison: Local Companies vs. National Brokers

Many of these scams are run by out-of-state brokers who focus on high sales volume, not customer value. They may post a local phone number on their listing to hide the fact that they aren't part of the Milwaukee community. You will often find them in the paid advertising section of search results.

Choosing a local, family-owned company means you are working with a team that is accountable to its community, understands local disposal regulations, and prides itself on providing safe, high-quality equipment and reliable service.

How to Genuinely Save Money on a Dumpster Rental

Saving money isn't about finding the cheapest price, it's about getting the best value!

  • Choose the Right Size: Don't pay for a 30-yard dumpster when you only need a 12-yard. We can help you estimate the perfect size for your project.
  • Recycle Clean Materials: We offer lower rates for dumpsters used exclusively for materials like concrete, asphalt, and dirt.
  • Avoid Prohibited Items: Placing hazardous materials in a dumpster can result in significant penalty fees.
  • Don't Overfill: Keep all debris level with the top of the dumpster walls to avoid extra charges and ensure safe transport.

Is It Worth It to Rent a Dumpster?

Absolutely. For any home cleanout, remodeling, or construction project, a dumpster is the most efficient and cost-effective way to manage waste. It saves you the time, fuel costs, and hassle of making multiple trips to the dump with a pickup truck. And if you have limited space for a dumpster or a smaller amount of waste, our full-service junk removal team can handle the job for you. Ready for a fair price and great service?
